Irradiation Unit
The Irradiation Unit of IFET S.A. was established in the early 1980s and has been operating continuously ever since, making it one of the company’s oldest and most specialized facilities. In its early years of operation, it served the production needs of the former ELVIONY S.A.
Today, the Unit operates exclusively in providing irradiation services for medical devices to domestic and international companies, consistently maintaining a high level of expertise, safety, and reliability.
Irradiation
The installed system consists of an industrial irradiator for medical devices (placed in cardboard boxes) from Nordion, a Sotera Health group company, which is globally recognized as a pioneer in nuclear medicine applications, with the largest number of installed irradiators worldwide.
The irradiation unit is certified according to EN ISO 9001/2015 and EN ISO 13485/2016 standards.
The operation of the radioisotope laboratory (irradiator) is licensed by the Greek Atomic Energy Commission.
Approximately 45 domestic companies, as well as 1 foreign company, sterilize their products through irradiation in our irradiator.
The unit is expected to be upgraded by enhancing the cobalt-60 source of the irradiator, thereby significantly increasing its production capacity (approximately 400-500%) to serve its customers faster. Alongside the source enhancement, modernization actions for other key peripheral systems of the facility are also planned.
Management of Household Pharmaceutical Waste
IFET S.A., under the supervision of EOF (National Organization for Medicines), is responsible for the management of household pharmaceutical preparations and residual household medicines.
Expired household medicines collected from pharmacies’ green bins are transferred to specialized centers, where they are deactivated or incinerated.
Pharmacies and pharmaceutical warehouses nationwide are obliged to participate in the collection system, and in case of non-compliance, sanctions are imposed according to paragraph 8 of Article 43 of Law 4025/2011, following a report by SEYYP (Health and Welfare Services Inspection Body).
